I've labelled it so you can see the A23a. From PolarView: Sentinel-1 SAR imagery acquired: 06-03-2017 01:01:06. A23a is about 75% the size the iceberg that will soon break from Larsen C, although I would be surprised if that coming iceberg will last as long as this one because it is so much further north and closer to the open ocean.

After breaking off from the Antarctic ice shelf three years ago, it is closing in on some of the world’s largest penguin colonies on South Georgia Island, a remote British territory in the South Atlantic, where it could block them from their hunting grounds An iceberg that had been the world’s largest is now breaking into pieces close to the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. Scientists had worried about the impact on the remote island’s wildlife if the berg had grounded on its continental shelf. The title now passes to A23A, which is much further south in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica.

A23A is not leaving the Weddell Sea anytime soon in my opinion although ice formation to the south may help move it north during Iceberg A23A has moved significantly over the winter and is not classified as grounded anymore by the National Ice Center. According to their iceberg tables it happened in Week 28 (between 3rd and 10th July).

The short duration and fast developments of the LLJs illustrate the benefit of vertical wind profiles with high temporal resolution. The dynamics of the LLJs were not studied in detail. They occurred during the passage of a synoptic front, when the ship operated in a polynya in the lee of a huge iceberg (A23A, size about 60 km × 80

A23a iceberg

The iceberg A22A was photographed when it was about a third of the distance from South America towards Cape Town, South Africa. A22A is one of the largest icebergs to drift as far north as 50 degrees south latitude, bringing it beneath the daylight path of the International Space Station (ISS).

The Southern Ocean sea surface features striking contrasts in albedo between open water and sea ice, and as such remote sensing is an ideal tool to detect trends in sea-ice spatial and temporal extent [].Satellite data can be enhanced (when cloud obscures satellite image capture) and ground-truthed by in situ manually operated or remote image capture. 2015-08-07 Sea with a glacier front of around 450 km.
