A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets , the value of X, and additional or alternative costs.

Despite what many may initially perceive about green's large size and late-game potential, Green has access to numerous incredible spells that only cost a single mana!
However, I read the cranial insertion or whatever article and it said while X spells are on the stack, the CMC of X spells is "whatever you payed for X + the cards CMC." So let's say you pay 3UUU for Blue Sun's Zenith. While it's on the stack it has a converted mana cost of 6?

Because you can’t pay the mana cost for spells copied with Twincast, X is zero. X is always zero. For example: I play Draining Whelk on a 13BB-costing Profane command. The spell gets countered, but the whelk would only get two measly counters, not 15, because X is on the stack, and X is always zero on the stack.

For example, if a permanent spell costs {X}{W}, you could cast it with X as 1 but not as 2. EDIT – I think my original answer to this might have been a bit misleading, so I’m amending it.
